WATERWAYS IRELAND

Waterways Ireland is one of the six North/South Implementation Bodies established under the British Irish Agreement in 1999. Waterways Ireland manages, maintains, develops and promotes over 1000km inland navigable waterways principally for recreational purposes. The waterways under the remit of the body are the Barrow Navigation, the Erne System, the Grand Canal, the Lower Bann, the Royal Canal, the Shannon-Erne Waterway and the Shannon Navigation.

Waterways Ireland and VMI have been collaborating for 4 years now in monitoring the users of the waterways. Along the different navigations there are a variety of counters monitoring visitors to discover usage and seasonal trends along the waterways. The data Waterways Ireland receive from the counters they use to compare sites by level of use and to support product development along the navigations.

APPALACHIAN TRAIL

The Appalachian Trail is the longest hiking-only footpath in the world, ranging from Maine to Georgia (America). It has now been traced across the Atlantic Ocean to Ireland. Visitor Monitoring Ireland has now completed the job of marking out the Appalachian Trail throughout the Sperrins. If you want to follow the trail through the Sperrins you can follow the signs - a sample of the signage can be seen in the photo below. Visit http://www.walkni.com/iat/

SMART POSTS

The Smart Post is designed and manufactured by VMI. It was introduced in 2015 and is proving to be a great success. Prior to the Smart Post the pyros (body heat sensors) and the loggers which record the date were being installed in wooden fence posts and some loggers were even being concealed in the ground. This caused major problems with condensation. Some metal posts which are used by phone and electrical companies  where tried but the old problems of condensation and large openings close to ground level proved them unsatisfactory. The Smart Post is a sealed unit with the access door at the top 1800mm above ground level. This has proved essential in certain locations where flood and high tides are an issue. The door is secured with a special hex pin which makes for easy access to collect data.
